noun

  1. Any of various synthetic blue or green dyes.
  2. A coal-tar color used in dyeing, produced by the simultaneous oxidation of a phenol and a paradiamine. It comes into commerce as a blue powder resembling indigo. It produces on cotton and wool indigo-blue shades, fast to light and bleaching-powder, but destroyed by even weak acids.
  3. Any one of a series of artificial blue dyestuffs, resembling indigo in appearance, and obtained by the action of phenol on certain nitrogenous derivatives of quinone. Simple indophenol proper, the parent compound of the dye series, is a quinonimine derivative with the formula C12H9NO2.
  4. Any of a class of blue or green <xref>dyes</xref> produced by <xref>oxidation</xref> of <xref>phenols</xref> and <xref>aromatic</xref> <xref>diamines</xref>
