- A salt of which the basic element or radical presents a higher degree of apparent valence than the corresponding protosalt. Thus ferric sulphate (Fe<sub>2</sub>(SO<sub>4</sub>)<sub>3</sub>) is spoken of as one of the <em>persalts</em> of iron, in contrast to ferrous sulphate (FeSO<sub>4</sub>), the corresponding protosalt of the same metal.
- A term formerly given to the salts supposed to be formed respectively by neutralizing acids with certain peroxides.
